Is there an AI for Shopify reports? Sidekick, ShopifyQL, and what a report still needs
Shopify already ships an AI assistant that answers questions about your store. An answer in a chat and a report that arrives every Monday, counted the same way, are different things, and most stores need both.
Shopify has an AI assistant of its own. Sidekick answers questions about store data inside the admin, and the ShopifyQL editor on the higher plans takes a "Refine query" prompt from it. Merchants like it: a small-store reviewer wrote in April 2026 that "Sidekick, Shopify AI, helps a lot by providing in-depth information about the store," and another in March 2026 that the assistant gives "quick answers instead of digging deep into reports."
So the honest question is not whether an AI can look at your store. It is what a question is good for, and what it is not.
What asking a question is good for
A plain-language question is the shortest path to one number: how did the drop do, which collection carried the week, what is the margin on the new colourway. Captain Miles starts the same way. You describe the report in a sentence, the way you would ask the partner who runs the numbers, and it shows you the plan before anything runs.
What a report needs that an answer does not
An answer in a chat is gone when the tab closes. A report is the same table every Monday, counted the same way, sent to the bookkeeper and the ops manager, with a note on how each number was produced. It has to survive the week you are at a trade show and the month the bookkeeper changes. It also has to be honest about its edges: variants with no cost recorded listed separately, returns counted in one stage only, a collection total that does not add to the store total because a product can sit in two collections.
That repeatable part is what Captain Miles is built for. Say it once, approve the plan, and the same report arrives on schedule from the orders, products, variants, inventory and returns in your own store.
What happens to your data
Shopify's rules for apps are strict here, and we follow them: your store data is used for your store only, never used to train a model, never compared across stores, and deleted within 30 days if you uninstall. The report tells you where each number came from, so the answer is yours to check, not ours to trust.
